Why does a small business need a website?

In 2018, it was recorded that 90% of adults in the UK are internet users. What is even more interesting, virtually all adults aged 16 to 34 were recent internet users (99%). With more and more people using the internet for one thing or another, as a small business it is imperative that your business is online. In this article, we will be looking at the importance of why you and your business needs to be on the World Wide Web.

What is a website?

A website is a collection of web pages, multimedia content which is commonly identified with the same domain name. This collection of web pages needs to be published on at least one web server, for example, thelocalmarketingteam.co.uk. Websites are accessed through a public Internet Protocol network, like the internet or a private local area network.

The web pages are made up of various programming languages like HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). Your potential customer’s website browser will render this code to show what you see on the webpages, like this one.

So now you’re thinking why does my business need a website?

With 90% of adults in the UK are internet users, then why are you not on the internet!

Think about a situation that you have been in – You’re having a conversation with your partner and they mention something you have not heard of. With this, what is your reply? “I will just Google what that is” Seeing the result at your fingertips solves the unknown of what you didn’t know and the conversation continues.

Mobile Website

In terms of a business, then wouldn’t you want to be that answer that a customer has just “Googled”. Yes, yes you do! How do you get to be that answer, I hear you ask? Well, you need to have a website. A website that clearly states who you are, the services that you provide and any other RELEVANT information about your business.

Once you have your website, it does take a little promotion and optimisation to get you to where you need to be, but it all starts with a website.

Websites are cheaper than traditional marketing tactics

Not only does your name get to the fingertips of your customers, but it is also a lot cheaper to maintain than traditional advertising. Your monthly cost on your website would be for your monthly hosting costs, and that is it. Not only are they getting cheaper by the year, but the website is also reaching more and more people.

Websites are easy to maintain & keep up to date

Most websites are built on a content management system. For a small business being able to quickly change your website is key to get out the latest offer or product change information. Content Management Systems or CMS, are really easy to navigate and update your information even from your mobile phone.

Customers are checking websites first

With more than 30% of customers not choosing a business to complete their work or to buy products from without a website, you could be losing a lot of revenue. Even if you are not selling products online, your business still needs to be there.

Your customer is searching for you

With 97% of customers going online to find and research a local business, even if you are not there, they are looking for you. Believe it or not, there are over 3.5 billion searches on Google in one day and whilst you are reading this, there will be someone searching for the service that you provide in your area. It’s a no brainer, why are you not there?
